What is a lubricant?

A lubricant is a smooth, liquid substance which is used to reduce friction between the certain objects. The lubricants from this category are intended, among other things, to make sex, masturbation and sexual intercourse smoother .

The arguments for choosing a lubricant can differ greatly from each other. A lubricant can serve to combat dryness and pain during penetration , but also to enjoy sex longer. There are different types, each with their own properties. Water and silicone based lubricants are the most common.

Who is this product for?

A lubricant can be used for a variety of reasons. In most cases to make sex feel (more) comfortable. Sometimes the use is also forced, because the partner experiences too much pain during sexual intercourse. This can be caused by dryness, but also by vaginismus, for example, where the muscles of the vagina squeeze without the woman having control over it. We have explained the different motives for using a lubricant below.

Dryness

There are several glands in the vagina that produce moisture to keep the vagina wet inside. When a woman becomes aroused, these glands produce even more fluid. When these work less well, this can lead to a certain degree of vaginal dryness.

A lubricant is an excellent aid to use when you as a woman suffer from vaginal dryness. In most cases, a dry vagina is caused by hormone fluctuations. These fluctuations can occur due to, for example, the use of a contraceptive pill, other medicines or during the menstrual period. In these cases, a lubricant can still ensure that you can enjoy sex comfortably.

It may sound strange, but the water from the shower or bath can also dry out the vagina. If you and your partner want to have sex together in the shower, it is advisable to go for a silicone-based lubricant. Water-based moisturizing gels wash away when they come into contact with water.

Extra comfort and stimulation

Even when there is no vaginal dryness, a lubricant can make sex more pleasant and intense. Even when you get moist quickly on your own, the extra slippery feeling can make you even more aroused. Masturbation is also perceived as more pleasant by most people when the penis or vagina is smooth and moist.

In addition, there are also special lubricants to be found, intended to give an extra dimension to your sex life. These have a cooling or heating effect which gives you extra stimulation. A good example of such a stimulating lubricant is the Durex Play Tingle Me, which gives a tingling sensation after application. This lubricant can also be used for the whole body. There are also moisturizing gels with an anesthetic effect on the penis and therefore delay the man 's orgasm. These have been specially developed to allow couples to enjoy sex even longer.

Massages

Some lubricants can also be used to give an erotic massage. Most of these gels have a warming effect. By blowing the gel briefly, a warming effect occurs, which makes the muscles relax even more easily. In addition, it provides extra stimulation of the skin so that every touch feels even more intense.

Most of these lubricants are silicone based. This lubricant has a long-lasting effect, which is recommended if you want to massage each other for a longer period of time. Because it doesn't dry or get absorbed by the skin, silicone lubricant can be tricky to clean. If you want to take less time for a massage, a water-based lubricant is therefore a better choice.

Oral sex

To give oral sex a special touch, you can choose a lubricant with a flavor. You will find moisturizing gels in fruit and chocolate flavors, for example. The senses are extra stimulated and let you and your partner get in the mood even more. Oral sex isn't normally your thing? A flavored lubricant can also make it more appealing to orally satisfy your partner. Lubricants with flavor are always water based.

Vaginismus / medical reasons

Some women unconsciously squeeze the muscles of their vagina, making penetration difficult or even impossible. This is called vaginismus. A lubricant can help in this case and ensure that you can still have sex in a pleasant way. Do you want to know more about vaginismus?

As a woman you can also suffer from painful vaginal skin or an irritated mucous membrane . This may be due to menopause or incorrect vaginal hygiene. There are several medical moisturizing gels that take these circumstances into account. These gels have a repairing and relieving effect and are made from natural ingredients. A popular medical lubricant is the LubraGel. LubraGel have been dermatologically tested and are recommended by doctors and pharmacists.

Sex toys

When inserting a sex toy, it is also advisable to use sufficient lubricant beforehand to facilitate contact.

What different types are there?

Water based lubricant

A water based lubricant is the most common lubricant and has a relatively low price. This lubricant dissolves easily in water, making it easy to clean . These gels do not stain and are safe to use with sex toys and condoms . The lubricant feels nice on the skin and makes it flexible and smooth. A standard water-based lubricant is neutral in smell and taste and therefore also suitable for oral sex . A disadvantage can be that this moisturizing gel is absorbed by the skin and dries quickly . This makes this lubricant less suitable for massages and ensures that you often have to use a reasonable amount.

Examples of water-based lubricants are the Easyglide Water-based and the Pjur Basic lubricant.

Silicone based lubricant

A silicone lubricant has a longer effect than a water-based moisturizing gel. A silicone-based product is not absorbed by the skin and does not dry up . It has a thicker texture than a water-based product and leaves a thin film on the skin. This makes this lubricant a bit more difficult to clean. Only do not use these gels in combination with a silicone sex toy . Otherwise, the material of your toy can be affected, leaving bacteria behind. Almost all silicone gels from this category are suitable for a long-lasting, erotic massage .

Anal lubricant

With anal sex it is necessary to always use enough lubricant . The anus itself does not produce moisture and is sensitive to damage caused by the thinner skin. Special lubricants are available for anal sex. These anal lubricants often have a thicker viscosity and an anesthetic effect, which makes the anus more relaxed and the penetration is smoother.

Stimulating lubricants

Lubricants make sex smoother, but can also be used for another reason. For example, special lubricants are available with a stimulating effect, to make the masturbation or sex even more intense . These stimulating lubricants give a cooling, warming or stimulating effect which gives you extra stimulation. A warming lubricant can warm up the muscles, which contributes to a better blood flow. They can also make the clitoris or glans more sensitive , so that every touch is experienced more intensely. A good example of this is the .

Fisting lubricant

Fisting is a sexual act in which several fingers or the entire hand are inserted into the vagina or anus. When fisting it is important to always use sufficient lubricant. An fisting lubricant is extra thick, does not dry and sometimes has a buttery texture. Optionally, a silicone-based lubricant can also be used. You do have to use more than if you would opt for a special fisting lubricant.

Which lubricant should I have?

Do you not know exactly which lubricant you need due to the large selection? The chart below can be used to determine which lubricant is most suitable for you.

I want a lubricant for:	Type of lubricant:
A low price	Water-based lubricant
Long-lasting effect	Silicone lubricant
Use with condoms	Water-based lubricant / latex friendly
For sensitive skin	Pjur med lubricant
Anal sex	Anal lubricant
Oral sex	Water-based lubricant / Lubricant with flavor
Heating effect	Stimulating lubricant
Cooling effect	Stimulating lubricant
Tingling sensation	Stimulating lubricant
Massage	Silicone lubricant
In the shower	Silicone lubricant
Fisting	Fisting gel
Easy to clean	Water-based lubricant
For my sex toy	Water-based lubricant

How do you apply the lubricant?

You can apply the lubricant directly to the penis, vagina or your sex toy. If you want to moisten the vagina, it is also advisable to apply something around the vagina . This minimizes the risk of pain during sex.

For a better feeling during sex with a condom , you can also choose to apply a little bit of (stimulating) lubricant to the inside of the condom. The condom remains firmly in place thanks to the rubber ring. So you don't have to worry about your condom slipping or tearing off your penis.

For easier dosing and application of lubricant , there are also special lubricant accessories available. With these syringes you simply suck up a little bit of lubricant, and then apply it in doses to the desired place. An additional advantage is that your hands stay clean and that it becomes easier to apply the lubricant internally.

How do I clean it?

A water-based lubricant is easy to clean with a wet cloth or some warm water. Silicone lube can be a bit trickier to clean. This is because it cannot be rinsed off with water. It is best to use a special cleaning agent to clean this type of lubricant. An example of such a cleaning agent is the Pjur med clean hygienic spray or the EasyGlide toy cleaner.

Do you suffer from stains in your sheets ? With a water-based lubricant you can wash it out again. A silicone-based lubricant can be more difficult to clean . To do this, use a detergent with lemon . Lemon ensures that the silicone releases so that the stains have disappeared after one wash. Avoid contact with suede or leather with this type of lubricant. The chance that you will get the stains out here is a lot smaller.
