      What is a speculum?

      A speculum, often referred to as a duckbill, is used in medicine as an instrument for opening and viewing the body cavities. Specula usually consist of two smooth blades that separate when the handle is squeezed. A gynecologist uses this aid, among other things, when taking a smear, in which cells are taken from the cervix.
